Guide for online sellers

How to stop fake COD orders in Pakistan

The most effective way to stop fake COD orders is to confirm every order with the customer by WhatsApp or a call before you dispatch it, and to cancel anything you cannot confirm. Add simple checks on phone numbers and addresses, a list of repeat refusers, partial advance payment for high value orders, and fast delivery, and most fake orders never leave your shop.

What is a fake COD order?

A fake COD order is an order placed with cash on delivery that was never going to be paid for. It might use a wrong or switched off phone number, an incomplete or made up address, or a real person who orders on impulse and refuses at the door. Some are pranks, some come from competitors or bots, and many are simply customers who were not serious.

Whatever the reason, the result for the seller is the same. You pay for packing and delivery, the stock is out of your hands for days, and you may pay again for the parcel to come back. Because there is no payment up front, COD makes fake orders cheap for the person placing them and expensive for you.

How do you confirm orders before dispatch?

Confirmation is the single biggest filter. Make it a rule that no COD order is booked with a courier until the customer has confirmed it.

  1. Send a WhatsApp message soon after the order comes in, while the customer still remembers ordering. Include the items, size or colour, total amount including delivery, and delivery address.
  2. Ask the customer to reply with a clear yes. A reply from the same number proves the number works and belongs to the buyer.
  3. If there is no reply within a few hours, call once. Many genuine customers miss messages but answer a call.
  4. If you still cannot reach them, hold the order and send one final message. Cancel it if there is no answer by your cut off, rather than shipping on hope.
  5. Record the outcome against the order: confirmed, cancelled, or unreachable. This becomes your data later.

Keep a short, polite script so whoever is confirming says the same thing every time. Customers rarely mind a confirmation message. Genuine buyers usually appreciate it.

How do you verify phone numbers and addresses?

  • Check the number format. A Pakistani mobile number has 11 digits starting with 03, or the same with +92. Anything shorter, longer or obviously repeated is a warning sign.
  • Watch for mismatches. A customer name that does not match the WhatsApp profile is not proof of fraud, but combined with other signals it is worth a call.
  • Ask for a landmark. An address with only an area name and no house, street or nearby landmark is hard to deliver and easy to fake. Ask for the missing details during confirmation.
  • Check the area is one your courier serves. Orders to places your courier does not reach will come back regardless.
  • Look for duplicates. Several orders from different names with the same number or address, or the same name across many numbers, deserve a closer look.

Should you keep a list of repeat refusers?

Yes. Keep a simple sheet or a tag in your store system with the phone number and address of every customer who refused a parcel without a good reason. When a new order matches, ask for advance payment or decline the order politely.

Be fair about it. A customer who was not home once is different from one who has refused three parcels. Note the reason for each refusal, so you flag patterns and not bad luck.

When should you ask for a partial advance?

For high value items, large orders, or customers on your refusal list, asking for part of the amount in advance changes the maths. Someone who has paid even a small advance by bank transfer or mobile wallet is far less likely to refuse. Common approaches are asking for the delivery charge up front, or a fixed share of the order value, with the rest collected as COD.

Decide your threshold in advance and put it on your website and in your confirmation message, so it reads as policy and not suspicion.

Does faster delivery reduce fake orders and refusals?

Speed does not stop deliberate fake orders, but it does cut down on refusals from real customers. The longer the wait, the more time a buyer has to change their mind, buy the item elsewhere, or spend the cash on something else. Delivering the same day or the next day catches the customer while they still want the product.

Speed also helps you spot fakes faster. If a parcel comes back in a day instead of a week, the stock returns to your shelf sooner and you can sell it to someone else.

Why tell the customer the amount before the rider arrives?

A common reason for a failed COD delivery is that the customer does not have the right amount of cash ready. Sending the exact COD amount when the parcel is out for delivery removes that excuse and reminds the customer that the parcel is coming. It also stops arguments at the door about delivery charges they did not expect.

How do clear product pages reduce refusals?

Some refusals are not fake at all. The customer simply realised the product was not what they expected. Clear product pages prevent this:

  • Real photos from several angles, including the product in use or on a person.
  • Exact measurements and a size chart in the units your customers use.
  • Material, colour and what is included in the box.
  • The full price including delivery, shown before checkout.
  • Your exchange and return policy in plain words.

How much does a fake order actually cost you?

Work out your own number, because it tells you how much effort confirmation is worth. Use this formula:

Cost per fake order = outbound delivery charge + return charge + packaging + marketing cost per order + any damage or loss on the returned item

Here is an example only, with made up inputs apart from the Rs 250 delivery charge. Replace every number with your own.

Cost item (example)Amount
Outbound delivery chargeRs 250
Return charge (ask your courier for yours)Rs 100
Packaging and insertsRs 40
Ad spend per order receivedRs 150
Damage or loss on returned itemRs 60
Example cost per fake orderRs 600

In this example, 30 fake orders in a month would cost 30 x Rs 600 = Rs 18,000, plus the stock that was stuck in transit and could not be sold. Compare that with the time it takes to send confirmation messages and the case for confirming every order is clear.

Fake order prevention checklist

  • Confirm every COD order by WhatsApp or call before booking.
  • Cancel orders you cannot confirm by your cut off.
  • Check number format and ask for a landmark on vague addresses.
  • Keep a repeat refuser list with reasons.
  • Ask for a partial advance above a value you set in advance.
  • Ship fast and make sure the customer is told the COD amount before the rider arrives.
  • Calculate your cost per fake order every month.

How do I stop fake orders on my online store in Pakistan? +

Confirm every COD order by WhatsApp or call before dispatch and cancel orders you cannot confirm. Add checks on phone numbers and addresses, keep a list of repeat refusers, and ask for a partial advance on high value orders.

Why are fake COD orders so common? +
